K – 6 Back to School Information

Dear 1st Lutheran School Family,                                                                               July 23, 2018

Celebrate! This school year there are so many reasons to celebrate – we are still in our year long celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, we join our city in celebrating Fort Smith’s 200th birthday year, we joyfully enter into our 165th academic year at 1st Lutheran, and we join First Lutheran Church in thanking God for 150 years of ministry! I also celebrate at the opportunity to join you in ministry as Principal here at 1st Lutheran! Yet, as we explore our school year theme of “Celebrate!” we will discover that God wants us to celebrate at all times, not just in times of milestones; our theme verse from Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord ALWAYS. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (emphasis added).

I am thankful for the talented and dedicated staff of 1st Lutheran School. Ms. Weidler, Mrs. Nix, and Mrs. Ballard will continue to lead Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade respectively. With my arrival and Mrs. Nieting’s return full time to the classroom, we will see some changes in 3rd-6th grade for this coming school year. Mrs. Donahue and Mrs. Brown will continue to be homeroom teachers for 3rd and 4th grade. This year I will be teaching social studies for each of those grades and Mrs. Merrill will teach religion and science for each.  We are excited to welcome Mrs. Kristin Basham to our FLS family as the 5th grade homeroom teacher! Mrs. Nieting will continue as the 6th grade homeroom teacher and have 5th and 6th grade combined in the afternoons for science and social studies. We are excited to continue to be greatly blessed with the fine arts and Spanish program that Mrs. Davis provides, with Mrs. McAlvain as our resource teacher, and the strong early childhood program led by Mrs. Dufresne and Ms. Jones.

I look forward to meeting you in the coming weeks! Today marks the beginning of a new year of walking hand in hand, supporting each other in the educational and developmental journey of your students. We rejoice greatly that you have entrusted us with this role; we do not take it lightly. Thank you!

Calling All Prayer Warriors

I ask you to consider joining us for a day or days this year in specifically lifting up our school, students, families, and staff to the Lord. Our goal is to have every day of this school year covered with intentional prayer – if you feel so inclined to sign up please do so at https://bit.ly/2MGGQfd (Case sensitive) or by scanning the QR code to the right.

Parent Orientation Meetings

At least one parent/guardian is required to attend the Parent Orientation Meeting conducted by their child’s teacher.  These meetings should last no more than hour, and are very important in helping establish positive and helpful communication between school and home.  You will be asked to fill out an Emergency Contact card for each of your children for the current school year. This meeting is for parents/guardians only.  We ask that children do not attend.  If you cannot attend, please contact the office to set up a time to meet with your child’s teacher so they can visit with you about the information covered at the Parent Orientation Meeting.  Meeting times are as follows:

Kindergarten                           Thursday, August 9                 6:00 p.m.

Grade 1                                   Monday, August 13                 6:00 p.m.

Grade 2                                   Tuesday, August 7                  6:00 p.m.

Grade 3                                   Thursday, August 9                 6:00 p.m.

Grade 4                                   Thursday, August 9                 6:00 p.m.

Grade 5                                   Tuesday, August 7                  6:00 p.m.

Grade 6                                   Monday, August 13                 6:00 p.m.

As we approach the new school year, we want to remind you of the process for the payment of tuition fees at First Lutheran School. First Lutheran School has chosen the Simply Giving® Program as our means of collecting tuition payments. Electronic funds transfer is convenient, reliable and safe—safer than writing a check, since it can’t be lost or stolen, plus there is NO COST for you to participate in the program.

August tuition is due the night of your orientation meeting.  Please pay your August tuition payment the night of Parent Orientation and have your first Simply Giving EFT deducted in September.

If you have any questions, please call the school office at (479)452-5330.
